Community Family Learning ESOL Programme
Community and Family Learning: ESOL Classes for Adult Migrants
Access to ESOL for Young Migrants and Refugees
Belong delivers ESOL lessons through Nottingham City Council’s Community and Family Learning programme. We offer Pre Entry to Level 1 ESOL through this programme. Each course is 10 weeks long and includes 2 trips to local places of interest.
Our ESOL curriculum focuses on the idea of “belonging”, giving credence to the idea that whilst students have travelled from a wide variety of countries, they are now settling in their new home, Nottingham. The lessons provide practical language skills to use in everyday life, including speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.
In Pre Entry groups, students will build simple vocabulary, and learn to write key words to talk about themselves. By Level 1, students are fluent at communicating, and focus on developing higher level
Belong offers courses at Pre Entry to Level 1. Our curriculum is built around the concept of ‘belonging’, focusing on the fact that students have a new home in Nottingham. We build practical, everyday English skills into our lessons which are crucial for integration. In addition, we include two trips to places of local interest to enable students to practise speaking English outside the classroom and to develop community within our student body.
Belong’s teaching staff have decades of combined experience from both community and further education sectors. All staff have appropriate teaching qualifications to underpin their practical experience. Belong has been delivering ESOL since 2011, and has worked in partnership with Nottingham City Council on several projects. We were proud to take part in their recent OFSTED inspection, for which they received a “Good” rating.
We work closely with BEGIN, who hold the waiting list for ESOL across Nottingham. BEGIN make referrals to us for the CFL programme. This helps us to ensure that transitions are made from these short, community courses to more formal, accredited courses.
Students report improvements in daily life skills, from reading medicine labels to engaging in community activities. Many students have progressed to college, and to university education, whilst others have secured employment.
Belong’s ESOL programme goes beyond language acquisition, actively promoting community cohesion. The multicultural environment of our classes serves as a microcosm of Nottingham’s diverse society, preparing students for active participation in their new home.
